Melbourne Airport, also officially known as Tullamarine Airport, is the primary international and domestic aviation gateway serving Melbourne, Victoria. Located approximately 23 kilometers northwest of the city center, the facility was established in 1970 to replace the nearby Essendon Airport. As Australia’s second-busiest airport (behind Sydney), it handles millions of passengers annually across its four distinct passenger terminals: Terminal 1, 2, 3, and 4. A key defining feature of Melbourne Airport is its 24/7, completely curfew-free operational status, which allows for continuous day and night flight schedules without restriction.

MEL is the commercial IATA code used for flight bookings, baggage handling, and public-facing flight schedules. YMML is the technical ICAO code used by air traffic control and for flight planning documents. Note: Ensure you are searching for Melbourne, Australia (MEL), not Melbourne Orlando International Airport in Florida (MLB).

Currently, there is no direct heavy rail link. The Melbourne Airport Rail Link (SRL Airport) is under construction, with works on the Sunshine Station Superhub starting in early 2026 and an expected completion date of 2030. For public transit, the best option is the SkyBus, which operates an express service to the city center every 10 minutes, 24/7.

Uber and traditional Taxis operate from the Ground level outside the terminals, while rideshare apps like Didi and Shebah operate from Level 1 inside the Terminal 4 Transport Hub. Depending on surge pricing and traffic, an UberX generally costs between $35 and $70, while a standard metered taxi ranges from $50 to $75 for a trip to the CBD.

Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are housed within a single interconnected building. Terminal 4 is a separate building, but it is only a 3 to 5-minute outdoor walk from the main complex. Keep in mind that a full transfer involving baggage collection and security re-screening will take considerably longer.

Short-term parking is optimised for stays under 24 hours and is charged at an hourly rate, making it ideal for quick pick-ups and drop-offs. Long-term parking leverages reduced daily rates for durations exceeding 24 hours, providing a more economical baseline for extended travel. Pre-booking your parking online will consistently yield cheaper rates than paying drive-up tariffs at the boom gate.

Yes, free unencrypted Wi-Fi is available throughout the public spaces and gate lounges of Terminals 2, 3, and 4 by connecting to the “Airport Free Wi-Fi” network. However, Terminal 1 (operated by Qantas) does not participate in this network and instead provides its own proprietary free Wi-Fi connection.

Yes. In Terminal 2 (International Departures), there are open access lounges, including the Marhaba Lounge and the Aspire Executive Lounge. These lounges welcome all travellers regardless of airline or ticket class. Entry can be purchased at the door or pre-booked online, granting access to buffet dining, premium beverages, barista-made coffee, and shower facilities.

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
