A Guide to Brisbane Airport (BNE)

Brisbane Airport is the primary international gateway to Queensland and the third-largest airport in Australia, operating 24 hours a day to serve over 25 million passengers annually. Located approximately 14 kilometers from the Brisbane CBD, the airport is unique in that its Domestic and International terminals are located 4 kilometers apart, meaning they are not connected by foot and require a bus or train transfer. The precinct is currently undergoing a $5 billion “Future BNE” transformation, which involves major upgrades to security, baggage systems, and terminal facilities to prepare for the 2032 Olympics.

Security wait times at Brisbane Airport vary throughout the day. Check the historical wait time chart on this page to find the quietest times.

You have two primary options to travel the 4km distance between terminals:

  • Terminal Transfer Bus (Free): Look for the Orange bus stops outside the terminal. The bus runs every 10 minutes (peak times) and takes approximately 10 minutes.
  • Airtrain ($5.00): You can take the train between terminals for a $5 fee. The journey takes 5 minutes, running every 15–30 minutes.

  • International to Domestic: YES. You must collect your bags, clear Customs and Quarantine, and then re-check them. If you are flying Qantas or Virgin Australia, you can use the “Domestic Transfer Desk” located on Level 2 of the International Terminal to drop your bags before catching the bus.
  • Domestic to International: It depends on your ticket. If your flights are on a single booking (e.g., Qantas to Qantas), your bags are usually checked through. If you booked separate tickets, you must collect your bags at the Domestic Terminal and take them with you to the International Terminal.

  • Domestic Terminal: The orange bus stops are located outside the terminal, specifically towards the Qantas and Virgin ends.
  • International Terminal: The bus picks up from Level 2 (Arrivals) and drops you off at Level 4 (Departures), right near the check-in counters.

Rideshare drivers cannot pick up at the standard curb. You must go to the designated zones:

  • Domestic Terminal: Exit the terminal and cross two pedestrian crossings to the central road island located between the taxi rank and the public pick-up road.
  • International Terminal: Go to Level 2 (Arrivals). Exit the terminal, turn left, and follow the “Ride Booking” signs down the ramp. The zone is located at the northern end of the building, behind The Coffee Club.

Yes, but only for short pick-ups. The ParkShort car park (at both terminals) offers 15 minutes of free parking. For longer stays, rates apply (e.g., approx. $15 for 15-30 minutes).

AIRPARK is the budget option. It is an open-air car park located away from the terminals, served by a free 24/7 shuttle bus that runs every 15-30 minutes. Drive-up rates start at approximately $25 per day, compared to ~$69+ per day for the terminal car parks.

Brisbane Airport is currently upgrading to CT scanners. If you are directed to a new security lane (CT scanner), you can leave laptops and liquids in your bag. If you are in a standard lane, you must remove laptops and aerosols/liquids. Always follow the specific instructions given by the security officer in your lane.

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times. 

For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time.
