A Guide to John Paul II Kraków-Balice International Airport (KRK)

Krakow airport is Poland’s second-busiest aviation hub, located approximately 11 km from the Krakow city centre. The airport recently set an all-time record by handling 13.25 million passengers in 2025—a 25% increase from the previous year—solidifying its position as a major business and tourism gateway for Central Europe. To keep pace with this rapid growth, which has pushed the facility beyond its original 12-million-passenger design capacity, the airport is undergoing an extensive multi-phase expansion. Immediate infrastructure improvements include the opening of six additional boarding gates for non-Schengen travellers in April 2026 and the completion of a new pier and automated baggage system by the fourth quarter of 2026. Looking further ahead, construction of a new 44,500 m² terminal section (T6) is slated to begin in spring 2026, with the goal of increasing annual capacity to 16 million passengers by 2029 and 19 million by 2031.

Krakow Airport has abolished the traditional 100ml liquid limit. Thanks to advanced CT scanners, you can now carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers of up to 2 litres each in your cabin baggage.

No. The new 3D scanning technology “digitally unpacks” your bag, so electronics, large liquid containers (up to 2L), and cosmetics can remain inside your luggage during the screening process.

It is strongly recommended to place car parts in your checked baggage. Due to safety regulations, security staff may refuse them in the cabin.

The SKA1 train is the most efficient option, taking approximately 17–20 minutes to reach Krakow Main Station (Kraków Główny).

A one-way ticket to the Main Station costs 20 PLN (approx 5 EUR), while a ticket to Wieliczka Salt Mine is 24 PLN. You can buy tickets at machines in the arrivals hall (Level 0), on the station platform, or from the conductor on board.

Rideshare drivers typically pick up passengers in the Kiss & Fly lanes located directly in front of the terminal or at designated spots near the multi-storey car park.

Bus line 300 is the most economical daytime option, costing 6 PLN for a 60-minute ticket. For late-night arrivals, night bus 902 runs hourly to the Main Station.

The Kiss & Fly zone allows for a 8-minute free stay for dropping off or picking up passengers.

While the official multi-storey (P1) and economic (KRK) lots are closest, several private lots (like Ale Parking or Holiday Park) located 1–3 km away offer cheaper rates (around 90–110 PLN per week) and include free shuttle transfers.

Krakow Airport is prone to morning fog, especially from October to December. Because it operates a Category I ILS, flights are often diverted to Katowice (KTW) or Warsaw. Airlines typically provide coach transfers back to KRK during these events.

The toll road is a private piece of motorway that connects Katowice and Krakow. The road runs adjacent to the airport, and as such you may have to pay the toll (17 PLN or approx. 4 EUR).

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
