    Auckland International Airport (AKL) Travel Guide:

    Auckland Airport is New Zealand’s primary aviation gateway and the largest transport hub in the country, located approximately 21km south of the Auckland Central Business District (CBD). As of the 2025, the airport is operating in a “live” construction environment as part of its massive Master Plan transformation, which aims to eventually integrate the currently separate International and Domestic terminals. Travellers should be aware that currently the airport consists of two distinct terminal precincts separated by approximately 1 kilometer:

    Domestic Terminal: Handles all domestic flights. This terminal is open from 4:30am to 11pm 7 days a week.
    International Terminal: Manages all international flights. This terminal is open 24/7.

    Auckland Airport FAQ

    Yes, in most cases. Unless you are from a visa-waiver country or traveling to/from Australia, you likely need a Transit Visa.

    • Transit Passengers: If you stay in the international transit area for less than 24 hours and do not leave the airport, you must hold an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) or a Transit Visa.
    • Changing Terminals: If you are connecting from an International flight to a Domestic flight (e.g., USA to Queenstown), you must enter New Zealand. This requires a full Visitor Visa or NZeTA, as you must clear Customs and Immigration to reach the domestic terminal.

    You face an instant infringement fine of NZD $400. New Zealand has strict biosecurity laws. You must declare all food, plants, and animal products on your New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). If you are unsure, declare it or dispose of it in the amnesty bins before the biosecurity checkpoint.

    • Prohibited Items: Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, honey, and eggs are strictly banned.
    • Outdoor Gear: Hiking boots, tents, and golf clubs must be declared and checked for soil.

    No, not for international flights. While Auckland Airport has upgraded to CT scanners (meaning you no longer need to remove laptops or liquids from your bag during screening), the 100ml volume limit per container still applies to international departures.

    • Domestic Flights: There are no liquid volume restrictions for domestic flights within New Zealand.
    • Powders: Inorganic powders (e.g., salt, sand, talcum) are limited to 350ml in carry-on.

    If you are arriving from overseas, before boarding a domestic flight, allow around three hours to cover procedures for entry into New Zealand. Furthermore ensure you leave sufficient time to travel between terminals.

    You have two free options:

    1. The Green Line Walk: A paved outdoor walkway marked by a green line on the ground. It takes about 10–15 minutes.
    2. Inter-Terminal Bus: A free shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes between 5:00 AM and 11:00 PM. Pick-up International: Transport Hub, Bus Stop B. Pick-up Domestic: Outside Door 2, Bus Stop C.

    • Uber/Rideshare: Typically NZD $50–$60, but can surge to $90+ during peak arrival times. Pick-up is at the dedicated Rideshare Zone at the Transport Hub.
    • Taxi: Fixed-rate fares to the CBD generally range from NZD $38–$99. It is recommended to agree on a fixed price before departing to avoid traffic delays increasing the meter fare.

    Auckland Airport only licenses specific taxi companies:

    • Alert Taxis
    • Auckland Co-op Taxis
    • Cheap Cabs
    • Corporate Cabs

    For shuttles: Super Shuttle.

    • SkyDrive Express: Direct bus to SkyCity in the CBD. Cost is approximately $18 one-way. It departs every 30 minutes.
    • Public Transport (Cheapest): Take the AirportLink (Orange Bus) to Puhinui Station, then transfer to a train to Britomart (City). Total cost is approx $6.70 with an AT HOP card.

    The Park & Ride is the most economical, costing approximately $35 per day (drive-up) or significantly less if booked online in advance. It requires a short shuttle bus ride to the terminal. For picking up passengers, the Short Term (P180) parking at the Transport Hub offers the first 10 minutes free.

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

    Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
