Zurich Airport Passport Control Guide

Zurich Airport (ZRH), locally known as Flughafen Zürich, is Switzerland’s largest international aviation hub and the primary base for Swiss International Air Lines. Located in the municipality of Kloten, approximately 13 km north of Zurich city center, the airport is frequently ranked among the world’s best for its cleanliness, efficiency, and relative ease of navigation. The airport features a central airside centre complex connected to two finger piers (Terminal A and Terminal B/D). A separate satellite terminal, Terminal E (Midfield), handles long-haul non-Schengen flights.

The EES is a newly implemented digital border control system mandated by the European Union. Starting November 17, 2025, it requires all third-country nationals (those without citizenship in Switzerland, an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway) to register biometrically upon their first entry into the Schengen zone. This replaces manual passport stamping with a digital dossier that captures a facial image and four fingerprints.

The EES is active in most Schengen countries. However, it is important to note that Cyprus and Ireland are not part of the EES system, and traditional manual stamping still applies when entering those nations.

If you are traveling together with your EU citizen family member, you derive free movement rights from them. You should process through the “EU/CH” line together as a family unit. This allows you to legally bypass the strict EES biometric enrollment mandated for solo third-country travelers and subjects you to shorter data retention periods.

Children under the age of 12 are exempt from the fingerprinting requirement of the EES, though a digital facial image will still be captured. Note that anyone under 18 cannot use the automated e-Gates and must use the staffed counters. If an unaccompanied minor is traveling, airline ground staff will escort them through passport and security controls so they do not have to navigate the biometric kiosks alone.

Yes, especially during peak intercontinental arrival banks (such as early mornings when multiple wide-body aircraft arrive simultaneously). Because the digital capture of biometric data takes longer per passenger than the old manual stamping process, wait times for non-Schengen arrivals have been documented reaching up to 120 minutes during peak operational hours.

There is an official EU app called “Travel to Europe.” It allows non-EU travelers with biometric passports, an NFC-enabled smartphone (iPhone 8/iOS 16 or later), and a frontal camera to pre-register their data up to 72 hours before arrival. Please note that the app’s full functionality is currently limited to specific entry points like Sweden, with broader support rolling out gradually. Furthermore, it does not replace the physical border check. You still must interact with the airport border infrastructure or a border guard to provide fingerprint data upon arrival.

It is highly risky. Arriving from a non-Schengen country and connecting to a Schengen destination means you must legally cross the sovereign border in Zurich, requiring full EES biometric registration. Travel experts currently advise abandoning tight 45-minute connections in favor of layovers of up to three hours when entering the Schengen zone through Zurich. If you miss your connection due to immigration delays on a single-ticket itinerary, airlines like SWISS will rebook you, but your arrival time will be delayed.

No. If you are transferring between two non-Schengen destinations, you remain in the sterile “airside” international transit zone (usually Gates D and E). You will need to go through a transit security check, but you will not pass through Swiss passport control and will not need to register for EES.

No. While premium tickets and elite status grant you priority check-in, extra baggage, and access to the “Gold Track” for security screening, they do not provide expedited access through sovereign state passport control. All business class passengers must join the standard immigration queues alongside economy passengers. The only airline exception is SWISS First Class, which provides a private transfer and dedicated immigration clearance.

No. Zurich Airport sells a “ZRH Comfort” package for CHF 49, which grants access to a Priority Lane for security screening and complimentary snacks. It provides absolutely no priority access for passport control or EES registration. If you book ZRH Comfort as a transfer passenger, keep in mind that the included food and beverage perks can only be redeemed within your specific accessible terminal area (Schengen or non-Schengen).

The only public way to bypass standard immigration queues is to book the official Zurich Airport VIP Service. This service starts at CHF 1,100 for the first person (and CHF 700 for each additional person) and includes private suites, a personal assistant, luxury tarmac transfers, and exclusive, private passport and security clearance.

Generally, no. While automated e-Gates have been active at Zurich Airport since May 2018 , they are strictly restricted to citizens of Switzerland, the EU, or the EEA over the age of 18. However, if a UK or US citizen legally resides in Switzerland and holds a valid biometric passport alongside a Swiss settlement or residence permit (Permit B or C), they are permitted to use the e-Gates.

Qsensor FAQ

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it.

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Click the “i” icon to view and take note of more contextual information on each airport. “Airport Last Updated” denotes the last time the data was refreshed.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

Qsensor is not affiliated with any airport, airline, or associated service provider.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.

For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time. The flight delay tracker gives you a comprehensive view of flight status delays, both for the current day and historically on a per flight basis. Tap on a weekday to see all flights that have historically taken off on that day and their typical delay over the past two weeks. You can also search for your flight using your flight number and view the airport’s average delay.

Get insights into flight on-time performance and make better travel decisions. Please note, this feature is not available for all airports, but we’re adding more all the time!

To keep wait times relevant, the message “There is currently no data for this airport.” is shown when no traveller has recently inputted a wait time.

For airports Qsensor automatically tracks, this message may also be shown if we haven’t recently gotten data from the airport. This typically rectifies itself within 12 hours.
