Introduction to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Dulles International Airport serves as the primary international gateway for the U.S. capital region. Located roughly 26 miles west of downtown Washington, D.C., the airport occupies 13,000 acres across Loudoun and Fairfax counties, making it one of the largest airports in the United States by land area. Opened in 1962, the facility is widely recognized for its iconic, mid-century modern Main Terminal designed by the renowned architect Eero Saarinen. Today, it operates as a major hub for United Airlines and provides flights to over 139 global destinations, having served an all-time record of over 29 million passengers in 2025.

The Silver Line Metrorail connects directly to the Main Terminal via an indoor pedestrian tunnel equipped with moving sidewalks. The walk is approximately 600 feet and takes about 5 minutes. Weekday peak fares range from $2.25 to $6.75, while off-peak and weekend fares drop to around $2.25 to $2.50.

The cheapest way to get from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington, D.C. is by taking the Silver Line Metrorail. Depending on the time of day and your exact destination, the fare ranges from $2.25 to $6.75. If you are traveling to Metro Center in downtown D.C. during peak weekday hours, the fare is $6.75. However, if you travel during off-peak hours (after 9:30 PM on weekdays or anytime on weekends), the fare drops significantly to between $2.25 and $2.50.

The station is easily accessible from the main terminal via an indoor pedestrian tunnel, and the ride to the city center takes approximately 50 minutes.

Ride app pickups are strictly located on the ground level outside Baggage Claim. You can access this area via Doors 2, 4, or 6 and proceed to the third curb, which is divided into specific pickup zones labeled 3A through 3H. Drop-offs occur on the departures level at curbs 3 A/B and 3 G/H.

While the AeroTrain provides quick access to Concourses A, B, and C, the Concourse C station requires a long walk through a subterranean pedestrian tunnel to actually reach the gates. If you are departing from Concourse D or the higher-numbered C gates (like C22-C28), frequent flyers strongly recommend bypassing the train and taking a Mobile Lounge directly from the Main Terminal or Concourse A to drastically reduce walking time

Passengers ending their journey at Dulles will be transported via Mobile Lounges from the aircraft directly to the International Arrivals Building in the Main Terminal. However, United Airlines passengers with connecting domestic flights who arrive during peak transatlantic hours (1:30 PM to 6:30 PM) are typically routed to a dedicated Midfield Customs facility in Concourse C. Wait times can vary heavily based on staffing and arrival banks, so utilizing Global Entry or the Mobile Passport Control app is highly recommended to expedite processing.

The airport operates two primary checkpoints in the Main Terminal:

  • The East Security Checkpoint (open 3:45 AM to 10:30 PM)
  • The West Security Checkpoint (open 4:45 AM to 9:00 PM)

TSA PreCheck is centrally located between the two main checkpoints and operates from 4:00 AM to 9:00 PM. CLEAR lanes are also available near the East and West checkpoints from 4:30 AM to 9:30 PM.

To guarantee a parking space and secure the best online-only rates, you should reserve parking online at least 12 hours in advance. The airport offers Terminal Parking just steps from the doors ($32/day maximum), Garages 1 and 2 with covered walkways ($21/day maximum), and an Economy Lot ($15/day flat rate). Free 24/7 shuttle service connects the Economy Lot and the Garages to the main terminal.

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers that have inputted their wait time using the “Add Wait Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
