Guide to Navigating Stockholm Arlanda (ARN)
Arlanda Airport is Sweden’s largest and busiest aviation hub, as well as the third-largest airport in the Nordic countries. Located approximately 40 kilometres north of central Stockholm, the airport serves as the primary international gateway for the region, processing over 24 million passengers in 2025. Operated by Swedavia, the facility features four active passenger terminals (Terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5) and is anchored by SkyCity, a central public area located between the terminals that offers extensive dining, shopping, and hotel accommodations. Acting as a major base for airlines such as Scandinavian Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle, Arlanda offers flights to over 150 direct destinations while maintaining a strong industry reputation as a pioneer in sustainable, fossil-free airport operations.

The most budget-friendly options are the airport coaches, such as Flygbussarna and FlixBus. Flygbussarna departs frequently, takes about 40–45 minutes, and costs approximately 129 SEK for a one-way ticket. FlixBus also offers competitive dynamic pricing, though pick-ups are restricted to Terminals 2 and 5.
If you take the public SL commuter train directly from Arlanda Central Station, you must pay a “passage supplement fee” of 157 SEK (for adults 18 and older) to pass through the station gates. This fee exists because the underground station was built and financed by a private operator in the 1990s, completely separate from standard SL transit fares.
For business or time-sensitive travellers, the Arlanda Express is highly recommended. It connects the airport to Stockholm Central Station in just 18 minutes, with an adult one-way ticket costing 340 SEK.
While an airside transit bus exists for non-Schengen transfers, it requires calling the bus and waiting up to 20 minutes. Experienced travelers highly recommend taking the free Arlanda Express train landside. The train shuttle between Arlanda South (Terminals 2, 3, 4) and Arlanda North (Terminal 5) is completely free and takes just one minute.
Navigating the airport is easier if you know a few key terms. The most common signs are Avgång (Departure), Ankomst (Arrival), Säkerhetskontroll (Security Control), and Bagageutlämning (Baggage Claim).
As of September 1, 2024, strict regulations were reinstated across Europe. Even with the new, modernised 3D scanners in Terminal 5, you are restricted to a maximum size of 100ml per individual liquid container.
Security checkpoints at Stockholm Arlanda operate daily, with each terminal having specific hours:
Terminal 2: Open from 04:00 to 20:30.
Terminal 3: Open 1.5 hours before the first departure.
Terminal 5 – New 5F: Open from 03:45 to 22:00 (if a flight departures before 05:00, it will open 2 hours before the departure time).

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.
Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it.
Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data, but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.
Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.
Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.
Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.
There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.

To keep wait times relevant, the message “There is currently no data for this airport.” is shown when no traveller has recently inputted a wait time.
For airports Qsensor automatically tracks, this message may also be shown if we haven’t recently gotten data from the airport. This typically rectifies itself within 12 hours.
