    Passport Control Guide for Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG)

    CDG is France’s largest and busiest international airport, serving as the primary hub for Air France and a major gateway to Europe. Located 26 km (16 miles) northeast of central Paris. The airport features three main terminals (Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3), with Terminal 2 further divided into seven sub-terminals (2A–2G). Whether you’re connecting to another flight, heading into Paris, or exploring France, CDG offers a wide range of amenities, including shopping, dining, lounges, and efficient transport links like the RER B train, TGV, CDGVAL shuttle, taxis, and buses.

    Wait times have increased significantly. Since the European Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational on April 10, 2026, queues have been known to peak at over four hours during the busiest travel periods due to new biometric registration requirements. Wait times at Terminal 2E, the main long-haul hub, now average two hours for non-EU arrivals. Passengers holding EU/EEA/Swiss passports who are eligible for automated gates typically clear the border in under 10 minutes.

    Because of EES-related delays and the massive physical size of CDG, aviation authorities advise arriving 3 hours before a European flight and up to 4 hours before a long-haul international flight. This is especially crucial for families traveling with non-EU passport holders who require their first EES registration. Terminal 1 is also flagged as a high-risk zone for severe international passenger congestion, so giving yourself plenty of buffer time is critical.

    The EES is a digital border system for the Schengen Area that replaces physical passport stamping with a centralized digital ledger. It requires non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period) to register their biometric data, which includes a facial photograph and scans of four fingerprints.

    Yes, non-EU travelers can use the “Travel to Europe” mobile application developed by Frontex. This app allows you to pre-register your passport data and facial image up to 72 hours before your arrival. While it does not guarantee entry or grant you the ability to skip the queue entirely—and you still need to see an officer to scan your fingerprints—it is designed to significantly reduce the processing time once you reach the border booth.

    Yes, citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and several other non-EU countries who are 18 or older and hold a biometric passport are eligible to use the PARAFE e-gates for both arrival and departure. However, you cannot use these automated gates for your initial first-time EES registration, because the gates cannot capture the mandatory initial fingerprints. You must use a manual booth or pre-registration kiosk for your first visit under the new system. At CDG, Terminals 2E and 2F are currently the best-equipped areas for these pre-registration kiosks.

    Yes. Paris CDG offers “Accès N°1,” a fast-track service providing priority routing through security and dedicated lanes at border control. This access is often included for premium economy, business class, and top-tier frequent flyers. Additionally, third-party VIP meet-and-greet services can be booked to personally escort you through expedited lanes, which can reduce the border wait to around 15 to 25 minutes.

    It depends entirely on your routing. If you arrive from a non-Schengen country (e.g., the US) and are connecting to a Schengen country (e.g., Germany), CDG is your legal point of entry into Europe, meaning you must clear passport control and EES registration before your next flight. If you are flying between two Schengen countries via CDG, it is treated as a domestic route with no routine border checks. Please note that CDG is a massive airport where sub-terminals are not always connected on foot. Even same-terminal connections (such as within Terminal 2) can occasionally take hours and cause missed flights due to passport control bottlenecks.

    Passport control, or immigration, is where officers verify your legal right to enter the country and collect your EES biometric data; this is the checkpoint where severe delays occur. Customs deals strictly with the movement of goods and taxes. You pass through customs (choosing the “Red” or “Green” channel) after retrieving your luggage, right before exiting into the arrivals hall. Customs checks are usually random and very fast.

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

    Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
