Ottawa Airport Travel Tips and Security Guide
When travelling through Ottawa Airport (YOW), it’s essential to be prepared for the security and customs processes. Here are some key tips to ensure a smooth journey:
Separate Screening Areas: Ottawa Airport has distinct screening areas for Canada/International and U.S. passengers.
Canada/International: The screening checkpoint opens at 4:00 a.m. daily from May to November, and at 3:00 a.m. from November to April. The CATSA Plus process, featuring parallel divest stations, is in place. Familiarise yourself with exemptions and restrictions before your travel day. A dedicated line is available for verified travellers and families or passengers requiring assistance.
Verified Traveller Program: This program is for individuals who have undergone extensive background checks and possess special photo identification cards. Verified travellers include NEXUS and Global Entry members, serving members of the Canadian or U.S. military, Canadian and international aircrews in uniform, airport workers with Restricted Area Identification Cards, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian police officers. The full-service line operates during peak hours (4:00 – 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 – 6:30 p.m.), while front-of-the-line service is available from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 11:00 p.m.
Travelling to the U.S.: Passengers leaving Ottawa on a direct flight to the United States will clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after passing through the CATSA security screening process and before reaching the gate area. This pre-clearance means you will not need to undergo any additional formalities upon arrival in the United States. However, CBP officers may request a secondary inspection, where you will be directed to an adjoining room, and your checked luggage may be recalled for inspection.
CBP Hours of Operation: The CBP operates daily from 4:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Seasonal hours may affect opening times, so check the latest hours at www.cbp.gov/travel/preclearance#benefits. Note that hours are not adjusted for delayed flights. During peak periods (4:30 – 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 – 7:00 p.m.), passengers should arrive at the airport two hours before their flight’s departure time. Canadian citizens applying for U.S. – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) work status should arrive early to ensure enough time for application processing.
Mobile Passport Control (MPC): The free MPC app can expedite your entry into the United States. This app allows you to submit your passport information and customs declaration before entering the CBP preclearance area. You can create a profile for up to 12 travellers in your group on a single form. To save time, download the MPC app from the App Store or Google Play, fill out the form in advance, and submit your request upon arrival at Ottawa Airport, no later than two hours before your flight.
Packing Smart: Be informed about what items are allowed in carry-on or checked baggage. The CATSA website offers comprehensive travel tips. Ensure your luggage is tagged with your contact information.
Special Accommodations: Passengers with special needs can request accommodations. If necessary, CATSA can perform a physical search in a private room, conducted by a male or female screening officer with a witness present.
Customs: Passengers flying within Canada or to destinations other than the U.S. are not required to pass through Customs at Ottawa Airport.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a hassle-free experience at Ottawa Airport. Safe travels!
