    Airport Guide for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

    Newark is a major aviation gateway located approximately 15 miles southwest of Midtown Manhattan, straddling the boundary between Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Opened in 1928, it holds the distinction of being the first major airport to serve the New York metropolitan area. Today, EWR functions as a critical node in the global airspace system, serving as a massive fortress hub for United Airlines, which dominates operations in Terminal C. The airport is composed of three distinct terminals, the recently opened, award-winning Terminal A, the international-focused Terminal B, and the United-exclusive Terminal C. The facility is currently in a phase of significant transformation, managing high passenger volumes while undertaking major infrastructure projects, including the $3.5 billion replacement of its aging AirTrain system.

    Newark International Airport FAQ

    As of January 15, 2026, AirTrain service to/from the Airport Train Station is suspended on weekdays from 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM due to the AirTrain Newark Replacement Program. The suspension is expected to last at least four years, with some pauses during peak travel periods (e.g., Memorial Day to Labor Day, and the 2026 holiday season). On weekends, the AirTrain operates normally.

    • The Alternative: Free shuttle buses replace the AirTrain during suspension hours, running every 4–5 minutes and connecting the Airport Station, all terminals, and parking lots. Plan for 15–30 minutes of extra travel time.
    • Time Impact: Plan for at least 15–30 minutes of extra travel time if arriving during these hours, as you will need to transfer from the train to a bus.

    Do not take the AirTrain. You must use the United Airlines Airside Shuttle.

    • From Terminal A: Go to Gate A28. Take the shuttle to Terminal C (Gate C71).
    • From Terminal C: Go to Gate C71. Take the shuttle to Terminal A (Gate A28).

    Who can use it? While operated by United, it is generally available to all passengers with a valid boarding pass for the connecting terminal. It runs from 4:00 AM to Midnight.

    Yes, but it has limited hours and access. A United shuttle runs from Terminal A (Gate A28) and Terminal C (Gate C71) to Terminal B (Gates B60-B68).

    • Hours: It typically operates only from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
    • Restriction: This shuttle drops you at the Star Alliance gates (B60-B68). If your flight departs from a different pier in Terminal B (e.g., British Airways or Spirit), you cannot reach your gate from this drop-off point without exiting and re-clearing security.

    The terminals are not connected by airside walkways. Walking landside (outside security) is possible but difficult and involves walking along busy roadways or through parking decks. You must take the AirTrain or shuttle buses to move between terminal buildings.

    No. The “Terminal A Station” is connected to a parking garage, not the terminal itself. After exiting the AirTrain, you must take a shuttle bus (5–7 minutes) or walk across a pedestrian bridge and through the parking garage (about 15 minutes.

    The cheapest official on-airport option is Economy Lot P6, with pre-booked rates starting at $30.00 per day. Drive-up rates are $35.00 for the first 24 hours and then $17.50 for each 12 hour increment after that.

    Off-site lots (e.g., The Parking Spot, Snap Parking) offer lower rates, but require using their private shuttles.

    Yes. Take NJ Transit or PATH to Newark Penn Station, then transfer to NJ Transit Bus #62. The bus fare is approximately $2.00 and drops you directly at Terminals A, B, and C.

    Note: This method takes longer and is not ideal for heavy luggage.

    • Sleeping: Minute Suites is located in Terminal C (near Gate C125). It offers private rooms with daybeds by the hour. Otherwise, Terminal A has some armrest-free benches, while Terminal C is mostly restaurant seating.
    • Showers: Available only in the United Polaris Lounge (Terminal C), British Airways Lounge (Terminal B), and Minute Suites (Terminal C, for a fee).

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

    Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
