    Munich Airport Guide and Travel Tips

    Munich Airport (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport – MUC) is a major European aviation hub located approximately 30 km northeast of Munich. It is one of the few airports worldwide rated as a 5-Star Airport by Skytrax, known for its cleanliness and efficient layout, though it has recently faced challenges with security queuing times. The airport is split into two distinct operational worlds. Terminal 2 (and its Satellite extension) is exclusively a hub for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners, while Terminal 1 handles all other airlines (Oneworld, SkyTeam, etc.) in a decentralised modular layout.

    Munich Airport FAQ

    Both lines connect the city center (Marienplatz/Hauptbahnhof) to the airport, but they take different routes.

    • The S8 (East Route): This is generally faster (approx. 38 mins) and more reliable because the train does not split.
    • The S1 (West Route): Warning: This train physically splits at Neufahrn station. The rear carriages go to the Airport, while the front carriages divert to Freising. If you take the S1, you must ensure you are in the correct section of the train.

    Avoid buying standard single tickets if you are traveling as a pair or group.

    • Solo Travelers: The “Airport-City-Day-Ticket” (Single) costs approx.  €15.50. It covers your trip to the city plus unlimited transport (bus/tram/U-Bahn) until 6 AM the next day.
    • Groups (2-5 people): The “Airport-City-Day-Ticket” (Group) costs approx. €29.10 total. This is significantly cheaper than buying additional individual single tickets (~€13.60 each)

    t is a good alternative if you have heavy luggage or if the S-Bahn is affected by strikes/delays.

    • Pros: It guarantees a seat, has luggage storage under the bus, and runs nonstop to Munich Central Station (approx. 45 mins).
    • Cons: It can be affected by road traffic. Cost: ~€12.00 one-way (online) or €13.00 (from driver).

    You cannot drive or walk to the Satellite Terminal from the street. It is an airside-only extension of Terminal 2.

    Process: Check in at the main Terminal 2 building, go through security, and then take the underground automated train (PTS) to the Satellite (Gates K and L). The train ride takes less than a minute.

    Yes, provided you have a boarding pass and your luggage is checked through.

    • Airside Shuttle: A bus runs every 10–20 minutes connecting Terminal 1 (Modules A-E) and Terminal 2. Follow the signs for “Gate Connections”.
    • Warning: If you are arriving from a Non-Schengen country (e.g., USA, UK) and connecting to a Schengen flight, you will still need to clear passport control and likely security before reaching your next gate.

    The official Minimum Connection Time is often listed as 45 minutes, but this is risky for large terminal changes.

    Recommendation: Allow at least 60–90 minutes if transferring between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, or if moving from Non-Schengen to Schengen zones, as passport control lines can be long during peak arrival times.

    • Free Option: If you are flying Lufthansa or partners (Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS) from Terminal 2, you can often book a “Security Time Slot” (Lufthansa Express) for free in advance to skip the general queue.
    • Status: Star Alliance Gold members and Business/First class passengers have dedicated Gold Track lanes.

    Yes, there are sleeping pods called Napcabs located airside. Locations: Terminal 2 (Level 04 Gate G06, Level 05 Gate H32), Satellite Terminal (Gate L04), and Terminal 1 (Gate B).

    Cost: ~€15–17/hr (Day) and ~€10–12/hr (Night). Minimum charge is usually around €30+. Payment is by credit card only directly at the pod touchscreen.

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
