LAX Airport Guide and Travel Tips

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary international airport serving the Greater Los Angeles area, located in the Westchester neighborhood approximately 18 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), the massive facility covers 3,500 acres and utilizes four parallel runways. As the largest and busiest international gateway on the West Coast of the United States, LAX served over 76.5 million passengers in 2024, making it the world’s eleventh-busiest airport. Uniquely, LAX holds the record for the world’s busiest origin and destination (O&D) airport, meaning the vast majority of its travelers begin or end their trips in Los Angeles rather than using the airport solely as a connection point.

LAX International Airport FAQ

Terminal 5 permanently closed in October 2025 for demolition and a $1.7 billion rebuild. If your airline was formerly housed there, you’ll need to check the new terminal assignments: Spirit Airlines relocated to Terminal 2, JetBlue relocated to Terminal 1, and American Airlines consolidated its massive operation into Terminal 4 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).

Yes! As of 2026, all terminals (Terminals 1-8 and TBIT) are seamlessly connected airside, meaning you do not have to leave the secure zone or re-clear TSA security to transfer. Walking between adjacent terminals (for example, from Terminal 4 to TBIT) usually takes about 5 to 8 minutes. Note: if your flight departs from the West Gates (Gates 201-225) at TBIT, be prepared for a 20 to 30-minute walk from the main hall via a long underground tunnel.

While the landside (pre-security) airport buildings are open 24/7, TSA security checkpoints usually close between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM. If you leave the secure airside area to claim bags or step outside, you will be locked out in the ticketing lobby until the checkpoints reopen. LAX does not have official sleep pods, and most seating has armrests. If you have a long overnight layover, booking a nearby hotel is highly recommended.

For standard rideshares (like UberX or regular Lyft) and taxis, you must go to the centralized “LAX-it” lot located east of Terminal 1. You can catch a free green LAX-it shuttle from the arrivals level, but if you are arriving at Terminals 1, 2, 7, or 8, it is often faster to simply walk there. If you want to bypass the lot entirely, you can order a premium tier rideshare (like Uber Black or Lyft Lux), which legally remains allowed to pick you up directly at the terminal curbside.

  • To Disneyland: The most budget-friendly route is taking the LAX FlyAway bus to Union Station ($12.75) and transferring to the Pacific Surfliner Amtrak train to Anaheim. Shared shuttles (like Prime Time Shuttle) offer a more direct, mid-range option starting around $17 per person.
  • To Santa Monica: Take the free green shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center and board the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus (Route 3 or Rapid 3). The ride takes about 60 minutes and costs just $1.25.

LAX offers several official parking options depending on your budget and how close you need to be to the terminals:

Central Terminal Area (CTA) General Parking: Located in structures P1 through P7, this is the closest option and is only a 3 to 5-minute walk to the terminals. Drive-up rates are $9 for the first hour and $7 for each additional 30 minutes, capping at a $60 daily maximum. You can also pre-book these spots online starting around $48 per day. Premium spots in P1 have a slightly higher daily maximum of $70.

Valet Parking: Available in structures P1, P3, P4, and P7, this offers the fastest drop-off. The drive-up daily maximum is $75, though pre-booking can lower the rate to as low as $32 per day. LAX

Economy Parking: This is a 4,000-space covered garage located about a mile from the airport that includes a free 24-hour shuttle running every 10 minutes. Drive-up rates cap at $35 per day, but you can secure rates around $15 per day by booking in advance.

Budget Surface Lot: An uncovered lot located 2.5 miles from the airport that includes a free shuttle. This is the most affordable official parking near the airport, with a daily maximum of $20, or starting at $13 if pre-booked. Van Nuys FlyAway Parking: Designed for San Fernando Valley residents, this facility is 24 miles away and requires taking the $12.75 FlyAway bus to LAX. Parking here costs $2 per hour and caps at a maximum of $5 to $6 per day.

Check the official LAX website for more details.

The maximum limit for parking in any official LAX on-airport lot or structure is 30 days. Vehicles parked beyond this 30-day maximum are subject to being impounded.

Qsensor FAQ

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it.

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Click the “i” icon to view and take note of more contextual information on each airport. “Airport Last Updated” denotes the last time the data was refreshed.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

Qsensor is not affiliated with any airport, airline, or associated service provider.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.

For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time. Is Qsensor missing an airport that you want to be supported? We are more than happy to accommodate your request, get in touch via the contact form

Make sure you include the name of the airport and its IATA code in your request!

The flight delay tracker gives you a comprehensive view of flight status delays, both for the current day and historically on a per flight basis. Tap on a weekday to see all flights that have historically taken off on that day and their typical delay over the past two weeks. You can also search for your flight using your flight number and view the airport’s average delay.

Get insights into flight on-time performance and make better travel decisions. Please note, this feature is not available for all airports, but we’re adding more all the time!

To keep wait times relevant, the message “There is currently no data for this airport.” is shown when no traveller has recently inputted a wait time.

For airports Qsensor automatically tracks, this message may also be shown if we haven’t recently gotten data from the airport. This typically rectifies itself within 12 hours.

If you have a suggestion for an airport you want to be tracked or a feature added, share it via the contact form.
