Guide to Navigating Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)

Formerly known as Honolulu International Airport, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) is the largest and busiest airport in the State of Hawaii, processing over 21 million passengers annually. Covering 4,790 acres, it is a massive hub that shares its runways with Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and features the world’s first major offshore runway. Named in honor of the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye, HNL serves as the primary gateway for both transpacific flights and inter-island travel.

The current TSA wait time at Honolulu International Airport is approximately 14 minutes.

HNL consists of two main terminals and a separate, commuter terminal:

  • Terminal 1 (primarily used by Hawaiian Airlines).
  • Terminal 2 (the larger terminal handling most international and other domestic flights).
  • Terminal 3 (standalone commuter facility)

These checkpoints are located on Level 2 and primarily serve Hawaiian Airlines.

  • Checkpoint 1B (Makai): This is the primary checkpoint, open 4:15 AM – 11:30 PM daily. It features 1–4 standard lanes and dedicated TSA PreCheck (1–2 lanes).
  • Checkpoint 1A (Mauka): Only open as needed (typically 6:15 AM – 1:30 PM) based on volume. It serves standard passengers only.

  • Checkpoint 3: Open 4:15 AM – 11:30 PM daily. It is the largest checkpoint with up to 6 lanes. Note: TSA PreCheck is available here “as needed,” specifically between 4:15 AM – 5:15 AM and 2:30 PM – 11:30 PM.
  • Checkpoint 5: Open 5:15 AM – 9:00 PM daily. This checkpoint has dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes.

  • Terminal 1: Use Checkpoint 1B.
  • Terminal 2: Use Checkpoint 5.

Additional TSA PreCheck checkpoints are opened during peak hours.

CLEAR is available exclusively in Terminal 1, Lobby 2 (outside Security Checkpoint 1A). It operates daily from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Yes, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are connected post-security. Depending on your airline lobby or concourse, it takes roughly 5 to 15 minutes to walk between the two buildings following signs for “Interisland Flights”.

Terminal 3 is a separate, standalone commuter facility. You cannot walk there from the main terminals; you must take the free, ground-level Wiki Wiki shuttle.

The post-security shuttles run between the C and G gates and Terminals 1 and 2 from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. Recently, the airport added electric trams to this route that specifically operate from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. The ground-level shuttles connecting the public roadways of Terminals 1, 2, and 3 run from 3:00 a.m. to 11:15 p.m

All rideshare pickups have been relocated to the ground level (Level 1) to ease traffic flow. At Terminal 1, the pickup is curbside, mauka (mountain side) of Baggage Claim 6. At Terminal 2, pickups are located at the ground-level medians directly across from Baggage Claims 19/20 and 31.

Yes. Skyline Segment 2 launched in October 2025, adding the Lelepaua Station at HNL. It is located on the mauka side of Terminal 2 and connects directly to the fourth floors of the Terminal 2 and International Parking Garages. Note that Skyline currently operates between East Kapolei and Middle Street and does not reach Waikiki directly.

You can ride the newly introduced W Line (Zoom) bus, which travels directly from the airport to downtown Honolulu, Ala Moana, and Waikiki. The fare is $3, or you can use a HOLO card for automatic fare capping. Please note that TheBus enforces strict baggage rules: all luggage must fit comfortably under your seat or on your lap.

All major rental companies operate inside the 5-story Consolidated Rent-A-Car (CONRAC) facility across from Terminal 2. If you arrive at Terminal 2 (Baggage Claims 19-31), you can walk directly across the street. If you arrive at Terminal 1, Terminal 3, or International Arrivals, head to the ground-level median to catch the free rental car shuttle.

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times. 

For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time.
