Airport Guide for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

ATL is the global heavyweight of aviation, consistently ranking as the busiest airport in the world by passenger volume, serving over 104 million travelers annually. Located seven miles south of downtown Atlanta, it operates as the primary “fortress hub” for Delta Air Lines and serves as a critical connecting point for air travel across the Americas.

Functioning more like a small city than a transit facility, ATL is defined by its massive efficiency and unique “spine” layout. It features two separate terminals, Domestic on the west and International on the east, which are connected airside by the Plane Train, an automated underground system that links seven parallel concourses (T, A, B, C, D, E, and F). Whether you are starting your journey here or just passing through, understanding this distinct layout is key to navigating the world’s most traveled transportation hub.

Atlanta International Airport FAQ

  • Domestic Terminal Main: Standard Screening, open 24/7.
  • Domestic Terminal North: Standard and Priority Screening, 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Domestic Terminal Lower North: Standard and CLEAR Standard, 3:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Domestic Terminal South: TSA PreCheck™ and CLEAR w/ PreCheck™, 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • International Terminal Departures: Standard Screening and TSA PreCheck™, 4:30 a.m. to midnight (PreCheck: 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.).

  • Main Checkpoint: General boarding.
  • South Checkpoint: Primarily for Delta passengers, TSA PreCheck, and Clear. Note that the South checkpoint often closes overnight (10 PM – 4 AM).
  • North Checkpoint: Other domestic carriers.
  • International (F) Checkpoint: Often has shorter lines. If you have no checked bags, you can enter through the International Terminal for a domestic flight and take the Plane Train to your gate.

No, you cannot walk between them before security (landside). The terminals are on opposite sides of the airport, separated by runways and a highway. You must take the Terminal Connector Shuttle (operates 24/7), which picks up at the West Curb of the Domestic Terminal (Doors W1/W2) and the Arrivals level of the International Terminal. The ride takes approximately 15 minutes. However, if you are already through security (airside), you can travel between the Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal (Concourse F) using the Plane Train or the pedestrian walkway.

Upon deplaning, follow signs to the Plane Train located on the lower level. Take the train to the Baggage Claim stop (Domestic) or the International Terminal stop (International), depending on where your final destination is. Do not try to walk to baggage claim from distant concourses like E or F unless you want a very long hike (over 1 mile).

Yes. The “Forest Walk” is an immersive art installation located in the underground pedestrian tunnel between Concourse A and Concourse B. It features rainforest lighting and bird sounds, offering a calmer alternative to the Plane Train.

  • Domestic Terminal: Pickup is NOT at the curb. You must walk (shuttles available) to the North Economy Lot. From baggage claim, go to the lower level (Doors N2/N3), exit through Door LN1, and follow the Orange signs across the walkway to the designated Rideshare Zone.
  • International Terminal: Pickup is at the outer curb on the Arrivals level (Doors A1-A2).

  • Daily Decks (North/South): $30 per day.
  • Economy Lots: $20 per day.
  • ATL West Deck: $30 per day (connected via SkyTrain). A
  • ATL Select: $15 (uncovered) to $20 (covered) per day.
  • Hourly Decks: Intended for pickup/drop-off. Rates increase quickly to a maximum of $50–$75 per day. Do not park here for overnight trips.

Yes, the MARTA train (Red/Gold lines) stops directly inside the Domestic Terminal (between North and South baggage claim) and is generally considered safe, efficiently connecting to downtown in ~20 minutes. While mostly safe, travelers often recommend staying vigilant late at night (post-10 PM) and sitting in the front car near the operator if concerned.

  • Paid: Minute Suites are located in Concourses B (Gates B16, B24), E (Atrium), and F (Gate F6). They offer private rooms with daybeds. (Hourly rates apply; Priority Pass members may get 1 hour free).
  • Free: There are no designated sleeping zones, but the Concourse F Atrium (Mezzanine level) is often cited as the quietest area with carpeted floors for resting.

Qsensor FAQ

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it.

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Please note that this data is monitored and may be modified or deleted if found to be invalid.

Click the “i” icon to view and take note of more contextual information on each airport. “Airport Last Updated” denotes the last time the data was refreshed.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For airports Qsensor does not track automatically, we source data from passengers that have inputted their wait time using the “Add Wait Time” button.

Qsensor is not affiliated with any airport, airline, or associated service provider.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.

For airport wait times, we currently support over 110 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time. Is Qsensor missing an airport that you want to be supported? We are more than happy to accommodate your request, get in touch via the contact form

For flight delays and cancellations, we currently support 7 airports, with the goal of expanding coverage going forwards.

Qsensor automatically tracks wait times for a variety of airports including London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Amsterdam Schiphol, Kempegowda Bangalore, Madrid Barajas, Hong Kong, Istanbul, and many more!

Make sure you include the name of the airport and its IATA code in your request!

The flight delay tracker gives you a comprehensive view of flight status delays, both for the current day and historically on a per flight basis. Tap on a weekday to see all flights that have historically taken off on that day and their typical delay over the past two weeks. You can also search for your flight using your flight number and view the airport’s average delay.

Get insights into flight on-time performance and make better travel decisions. Please note, this feature is not available for all airports, but we’re adding more all the time!

To keep wait times relevant, the message “There is currently no data for this airport.” is shown when no traveller has recently inputted a wait time.

For airports Qsensor automatically tracks, this message may also be shown if we haven’t recently gotten data from the airport. This typically rectifies itself within 12 hours.

If you have a suggestion for an airport you want to be tracked or a feature added, share it via the contact form.
