    Airport Guide for Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

    Chicago O’Hare International Airport is more than just a transit hub; it is a massive aviation city that serves as one of the primary global gateways for the United States. As a dual hub for both United Airlines and American Airlines, O’Hare handles over 80 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest and most complex airports in the world.

    The airport’s layout is unique and often confusing for first-time travelers. It consists of a connected domestic horseshoe (Terminals 1, 2, and 3) and a physically separate Terminal 5, which handles international arrivals and a growing number of domestic flights. Connecting these two areas is the Airport Transit System, a 24/7 automated train that serves as the airport’s circulatory system. While O’Hare has a reputation for winter weather delays and bustling crowds, it also offers iconic features like the neon “Sky’s The Limit” tunnel and a culinary scene that brings the taste of Chicago, from deep dish pizza to gourmet tortas right to your gate.

    Ohare International Airport FAQ

    It depends on the terminal. You can walk airside (past security) between Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 via pedestrian walkways, meaning you do not need to re-clear security to transfer between these terminals. However, you cannot walk to Terminal 5 from the domestic terminals; they are not connected by a pedestrian hallway.

    There are two ways to reach Terminal 5:

    The Airport Transit System: This is a free automated train that runs 24/7 landside (outside security). You must exit the secure area, take the train, and go through TSA security again at Terminal 5.

    The Terminal Transfer Bus: If you are already inside security and have a boarding pass for a connecting flight, you can take a shuttle bus that keeps you airside so you don’t have to go through security again. The bus runs daily from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM and picks up at Terminal 1 (Gate B1) and Terminal 3 (Gates G17, K20) to drop you off at Terminal 5 (Gate M13).

    Delta Airlines is located in Terminal 5. Note that while Terminal 5 is often called the “International Terminal,” it now handles domestic flights for Delta, Southwest, and Frontier.

    Typically, TSA checkpoints will open a few hours before the first departure:

    • Terminal 1: 4:00am – 8:30pm.
    • Terminal 2: 4:00am – 8:30pm.
    • Terminal 3: 3:00am – 10:00pm.
    • Terminal 5: 24 hours.

    The TSA PreCheck enrollment center is located in Terminal 1 baggage claim near Door 1G

    • Operating hours: Monday through Friday from 7:30am. to 11:30am. and from 12pm to 4pm.

    It is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

    TSA PreCheck is available at specific checkpoints:

    • Terminal 1: Checkpoint 2.
    • Terminal 2: Checkpoint 5.
    • Terminal 3: Checkpoints 7A and 8.

    Rideshare pickup locations depend on your arrival terminal:

    • Domestic Arrivals (Terminals 1, 2, 3): You must go to Terminal 2, Upper Level (Departures). Drivers cannot pick up at the curbside baggage claim of T1 or T3; you must walk or take the ATS to the designated “Ride App Pickup” zone at Terminal 2.
    • International Arrivals (Terminal 5): Pickups are located on the Lower Level (Arrivals) of Terminal 5.

    The CTA Blue Line station is located on the lower level of Terminal 2. A single ride ticket from O’Hare costs $5, and the trip to the downtown loop takes approximately 45 minutes.

    You can purchase SIM cards at InMotion entertainment stores located in all terminals (e.g., near Gate B7 in T1, Gate K12 in T3). In Terminal 5, SIM cards are often available at Hudson News locations near baggage claim.

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide an estimate, and we communicate that it’s a best-guess only.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data.     Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers that have inputted their wait time using the “Add Wait Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.
