A Guide to Calgary International Airport (YYC)

YYC is Canada’s fourth-busiest airport and serves as the primary gateway to the Canadian Rockies, handling nearly 19 million passengers annually. As the global headquarters and main hub for WestJet, as well as a focus city for Air Canada, it connects travellers to a wide array of destinations across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The airport is well-regarded for its unique “Western hospitality,” best exemplified by the famous White Hat Volunteers who greet arriving passengers. Structurally, YYC is designed as a single, expansive terminal building containing five connected concourses (A through E). This layout is intended to streamline the passenger experience, allowing for seamless transfers between domestic and international flights often without the need to exit the secure airside zone.

    Calgary Airport FAQ

No. The US Pre-clearance facility (CBP) is not open 24 hours. It typically operates from 04:30 AM to 08:00 PM.

    • Important: If your flight departs after 8:00 PM (e.g., a midnight flight to Atlanta), you will likely not pre-clear in Calgary. You will clear customs upon arrival in the US.

You should arrive at the airport early to check bags, but be aware of the metering policy. Passengers are generally only permitted to enter the US Security and Customs queue no more than two hours before their scheduled departure time.

    • Tip: If you arrive earlier, you can check your bags with your airline, but you must wait in the pre-security area (food court/shops) until that 2-hour window opens.

Yes. YYC accepts the MPC app. You can submit your declaration via the app upon arrival at the airport to access a dedicated express lane, significantly speeding up the process compared to the general queue.

Yes, but you likely don’t need to leave security. The YYC Link is a complimentary electric shuttle (10-seater cart) that runs airside (past security). It connects all Concourses (A, B, C, D, and E) regularly.

    • Walking vs. Riding: Walking from Concourse A (Domestic) to E (US) can take 15–20 minutes. The shuttle cuts this down to roughly 5–8 minutes.

    It depends on your connection:

    • Domestic to Domestic: No. Bags usually transfer automatically.
    • International to Domestic: Yes. You typically must clear Canadian Customs, pick up your bags, and drop them at the “Connections” belt immediately after exiting customs.
    • Domestic to US: Generally, no (if flying Air Canada/WestJet), but you must clear US Customs yourself. Always confirm with your airline at check-in.

    • Domestic to Domestic: ~30–40 minutes is doable but tight.
    • Domestic to International: ~40–50 minutes.
    • Domestic to US: Recommended 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. You must clear US security and customs during this layover.

There are several options depending on your budget:

    • Brewster Express: Large coaches connecting to major hotels in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.
    • Banff Airporter: Scheduled shuttle service with door-to-door drop-offs in Banff.
    • Vivo Green Travel: Often a budget-friendly bus option starting around $19.99.

Uber pickup is not at the main curb. You must go to specific doors:

    • Door 1 (Departures Level)
    • Door 12 (Arrivals Level – Outer Curb)
    • Door 17 (Arrivals Level)
    • Note: Ensure you select the correct door in the app, as the “Departures Level” pickup (Door 1) often confuses arriving passengers.

You can take Calgary Transit Route 300 (BRT). The fare is the standard adult single ride rate $4.00), purchasable at vending machines near Bays 7, 8, and 32.

    Qsensor FAQ

Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it.

Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

Please note that this data is monitored and may be modified or deleted if found to be invalid.

Click the “i” icon to view and take note of more contextual information on each airport. “Airport Last Updated” denotes the last time the data was refreshed.

Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

Qsensor is not affiliated with any airport, airline, or associated service provider.

We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times.

For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time. The flight delay tracker gives you a comprehensive view of flight status delays, both for the current day and historically on a per flight basis. Tap on a weekday to see all flights that have historically taken off on that day and their typical delay over the past two weeks. You can also search for your flight using your flight number and view the airport’s average delay.

Get insights into flight on-time performance and make better travel decisions. Please note, this feature is not available for all airports, but we’re adding more all the time!

To keep wait times relevant, the message “There is currently no data for this airport.” is shown when no traveller has recently inputted a wait time.

    add time button

For airports Qsensor automatically tracks, this message may also be shown if we haven’t recently gotten data from the airport. This typically rectifies itself within 12 hours.

If you have a suggestion for an airport you want to be tracked or a feature added, share it via the contact form.
