    Airport Guide for Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)

    Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), officially named Willy Brandt, is the sole international airport serving the German capital region. Located in Schönefeld, approximately 18 kilometers southeast of Berlin’s city centre, it officially opened on October 31, 2020, fully replacing the historic Tegel (TXL) and Schönefeld (SXF) airports. The airport consists of two active terminals located in the central midfield area:

    Terminal 1: The main architectural hub serving major legacy carriers like Lufthansa, United and British Airways.

    Terminal 2: A streamlined facility connected directly to T1, serving primarily low-cost carriers like Ryanair.

    No. Terminal 5 (formerly Schönefeld Airport) was permanently closed by the airport’s supervisory board in November 2022. Do not go there. All commercial flights now depart from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, which are located next to each other in the main midfield area.

    Yes. They are within walking distance of each other. Terminal 2 is essentially a check-in hall connected to the main infrastructure of Terminal 1. You can walk between them via a covered walkway on the Arrivals Level (E0) in just a few minutes.

    BER uses a One Roof concept for Schengen flights, meaning arriving passengers mix with departing passengers in the gate area. If you are arriving, follow the “Ausgang” (Exit) and “Gepäckausgabe” (Baggage Claim) signs, which often require you to go up or down escalators to reach the baggage hall on the lower level.

    You must buy a Berlin ABC ticket. The airport is located in Zone C (Brandenburg).

    Cost: €5.00 for a single trip.

    Important: You must validate (stamp) physical tickets on the platform before boarding. Failure to have a valid Zone C ticket results in a €60+ fine.

    It depends on your destination:

    • FEX (Airport Express): The fastest option (~30 mins) to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), stopping also at Ostkreuz and Gesundbrunnen.
    • S-Bahn (S9): A slower (~50 mins) but scenic route that stops at Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstraße, and Zoologischer Garten (City West). Both trains depart from the Flughafen BER station located on Level U2, directly under Terminal 1.

    There is no flat rate; taxis use a taximeter. A ride to Alexanderplatz or Mitte typically costs between €55 and €75. Uber and other ride-shares are available but must pick up at designated areas (often in the parking structures), not the curbside taxi rank.

    Yes. You can use BER Runway, a free service that lets you book a 15-minute time slot for security access.

    • Where: Terminal 1, Security Control 4.
    • When: Bookable from 7 days up to 1 hour before departure.
    • Booking: You can book it on the official airport website or app. Your slot is valid 10 minutes before and after your chosen time.

    BER is transitioning to CT scanners (which allow items to stay in bags), but not all lanes have them. Terminal 2 and some lanes in Terminal 1 have the new scanners. However, to be safe and avoid delays, it is best to pack liquids in a sealable bag and keep electronics accessible, just in case you are directed to an older lane.

    Ryanair has announced a ~20% reduction in its German operations for 2026 due to high location costs. If you’re planning on using the budget airline for your summer getaway, we recommend checking route availability well in advance.

    Live data: For the majority of the airports we track we use live data from the airport. For the remaining airports we provide a modelled projection, combined with crowdsourced data.

    Search: By airport name, IATA code, city, county, country or region. To save you time, we keep your last visited airports on the front page. If you can’t find an airport, contact us using the contact form and we will look to add it. 

    Current average wait time: The airport’s latest average security, passport control or customs queue wait time. If the airport has multiple queues, we display the average of them. If you want a more granular view that includes wait times for individual queues, take a look at the terminal level wait times. We regularly update each airport’s data,  but make sure you click the “i” icon to check when the last update was made.

    Terminal level wait times: The latest security or customs queue wait time for individual terminals. Click on the terminal to access more information at the terminal level. Please note that this data is not available for all airports. We are working to expand this functionality to as many airports as possible.

    Historical wait times: The typical wait time on different days and times over the past 2 weeks. Click the filter at the top right of the graph to cycle through the days of the week.

    Add a security or customs queue wait time: How was your airport security experience? Contribute to the community by inputting your wait time. This feature is only available for airports where Qsensor does not automatically track data. To add a wait time, simply click the “Add Your Time” button on the airports page and follow the instructions.

    Our sources for wait time data vary and may include air travel data aggregators, federal agencies such as the TSA, CATSA CBP, or information from the airport and its affiliated service providers. For some airports, Qsensor utilises its proprietary queue modelling technology to project wait times. Additionally, we crowdsource data from passengers who have input their wait time using the “Add Your Time” button.

    We regularly check queue times and flight delays for accuracy, however all times are estimates and waiting times and delays may not accurately reflect your experience. It is advisable to arrive at the airport well in advance and follow the recommendations of the airlines and airports.

    There are a wide array of ways that queue data is measured. Including but not limited to looking at how long a passenger takes to get from scanning their boarding pass to exiting the security or customs area. Auditing passengers on how long it took them to pass through security or customs as well as Qsensors’ proprietary system for user added wait times. 

    For airport wait times, we currently support over 140 airports worldwide. Whether it be London Heathrow, Istanbul, or Miami – we have got you covered. More are added all the time.
